Chief AI Officer: Does Your Indian Company Need One?
IBM says 76% of firms now have a chief AI officer, up from 26%. What the role really is, when an Indian company needs one, and how to hire well.
A chief AI officer is the executive accountable for how a company adopts, governs and earns returns from AI. You need one when AI spans several functions and no single leader owns the outcome. IBM's 2026 CEO study found 76% of organisations now have one, up from 26% a year earlier, though the title covers very different jobs.
What does a chief AI officer actually do?
The title hides three distinct jobs, and the first hiring mistake is to blur them:
- The builder owns models, data and platforms, and works close to the CTO. The test is what they have shipped at scale.
- The transformer redesigns processes and operating models so AI produces measurable gains, and works close to the COO. The test is what changed in the P&L.
- The governor sets policy on risk, ethics, data use and regulation, and works close to the board and legal. The test is what they have stopped or reshaped.
Few candidates are strong at all three. The board's job is to decide which one the company lacks, and hire for that.
How many companies have a chief AI officer?
IBM Institute for Business Value's May 2026 study of 2,000 CEOs across 33 geographies and 21 industries reports that 76% of organisations now have a chief AI officer, up from 26% in 2025. It also found that organisations with AI-first C-suite structures had scaled 10% more AI initiatives than competitors.
Two cautions. The study is global and does not isolate India, and a jump from 26% to 76% in a year suggests the title is being applied broadly, including to existing executives who have taken on AI as an extra brief. Appointing a chief AI officer and giving one real authority are different things.
Why are CEOs creating the role now?
The same IBM study found 64% of CEOs are comfortable making major decisions using AI-generated insights, and 85% say all functional leaders must become technology experts. Only 25% of the workforce currently uses AI regularly, and 29% of employees will need reskilling between 2026 and 2028, with 53% needing upskilling.
Boards share the concern. Heidrick & Struggles' 2026 CEO & Board Confidence Monitor found AI had the sharpest year-on-year rise among major risks, an 18-point increase. A named executive gives the board someone to ask.
When does an Indian company need a chief AI officer?
Hire one when at least two of these are true:
- AI pilots are running in three or more functions with no shared platform, data standard or budget owner.
- AI is part of the product or service customers buy, so failure is a customer and regulatory issue.
- The board has asked for an AI risk position and nobody can give a single answer.
- Investment is large enough that the return needs a dedicated owner.

Could the CTO, COO or CHRO own AI instead?
Often, yes. A company with a strong CTO and a modest AI footprint may not need a new seat. If the main gain is process change, a capable COO may be the right owner. If the constraint is skills and leadership readiness, the CHRO belongs in the lead. IBM's study found 59% of CEOs expect the CHRO's influence to increase.
A new title that sits beside three existing owners without authority over any of them creates a fourth point of friction. The mandate needs to be explicit: budget, decision rights and who the role reports to.
How do you hire a chief AI officer in India?
- Decide which job it is: builder, transformer or governor. Write down the first-year outcomes.
- Fix the reporting line and decision rights before approaching candidates. Strong people ask first.
- Map the market. The pool is thin and spread across technology firms, global capability centres, consulting and a few large enterprises. A talent mapping exercise shows who has actually delivered rather than who holds the title.
- Test for evidence, not vocabulary. Ask for a deployment that failed, what it cost and what changed afterwards.
- Benchmark pay carefully. We have no verified Indian pay data for this role, and published figures vary widely by definition. A bespoke compensation benchmark against comparable roles is safer than quoting a survey average.
A retained executive search is usually justified because the best candidates are employed, in demand and not looking. If your AI leadership will sit in a global capability centre, see our guide to GCC leadership hiring in India.
What goes wrong with chief AI officer hires?
Three patterns recur. The title arrives without a budget. The hire is a technologist asked to run change management. Or the rest of the leadership team is not ready: Korn Ferry's 2026 survey found only 11% of leaders say their executives are well prepared for the AI transition. A chief AI officer cannot compensate for a team that is not.
